Earthquake 1935

On 31st May 1935 at 3.40 am in the early morning the city of Quetta and the countryside for 100 miles to the south-west including the town of Khelat were devastated by a severe earthquake which lasted three minutes. There was another severe shock on 2nd June,Killed about 30000 to 60000 peopls. An official Government communique issued on that day from Simla stated: “1. The whole city of Quetta is destroyed and being sealed under military guard from 2nd June with medical advice. It is estimated that 20,000 corpses remain buried under the debris. There is no hope of rescuing any more persons alive. The corpses extracted and buried number several thousand. There are about 10,000 Indian survivors including 4,000 injured. 2. All houses in the civil area are razed to the ground except Government House, which is partially standing but in ruins. The church and club are both in ruins, also the Murree Brewery. 3. One quarter of the cantonment area is destroyed, the remaining three quarters slightly damaged, but inhabitable. Most of the damage was done in the RAF area where the barracks were destroyed, and only six out of the twenty-seven machines are serviceable. 4. The railway area is destroyed. 5. Hanna Road and the Staff College are undamaged. 6. Surrounding villages are destroyed with; it is feared, very heavy casualties. The number is not yet ascertainable. Military parties are being sent out to investigate and render help. 7. Outlying districts, as already reported from Khelat and Mastung, are reported to have been razed to the ground with heavy casualties. All the villages between Quetta and Khelat are also reported to have been destroyed”. A local newspaper headline announced “Terrible Disaster in Quetta - Staff College unharmed.

  9. My great grandfather "Thakur Basawa Mal" was a great businessman in Quetta in the late 18th and early 19th century. With his commendable writing skills, he started his career as a humble document writer and went on to become a Pistachio Orchardist and Commodities trader. He lost a lot of family members to this earthquake in 1935. I wish India and Pakistan unite again as one country and we can move back to our ancestral land. If anyone knows about him or other members of his family, please email me at kapilverma4@gmail.com

I lost my Grand father . My Grand Mother was just 18 years old with two yound kids. My father was 3 month old and my auntie was 1.5 year old. My Grand Father never saw his son i.e my father. My Grand Mother told me me that my Grand Father belonged to a very influential family. His mother was Principal in Arya Samaj school at Quetta. My Grand Mother was in Lahor when earth quake struck Quetta. She was not allowed to visit there. She faced many hardships and raised my father and my Auntie. My Grand Mother is no more. She passed away in 2006. Alas , I could take her to Quetta once

  15. All my photo pictures are of Quetta before 1934 and shortly after. Everything I was told was from my father so is not much, he said that before the 'quake it was a very modern city and that afterwards everything was flat and sandy and quiet. He was suprized because the hurt people were so grateful for any small help where as in England people expected much more less.

We lived in Quetta for a year in the mid 1950's while my Father was at the staff college. I have very happy memories of Quetta, even though I lost a lot of marbles in the games we used to play :-)

Non of those people are alive today and I am trying to find out more about my Grand Father. His name is William Osmond Ramage and was a driver on the N.W. Railway and died on May 31st 1935 aged 40. There are of course no pictures or records in the family and no one alive to ask questions any more. I am not sure if any records did survive. Maybe I will go to Quetta one day just to see..

The warmth and affection, the traditions. and those wonderful goodlooking people with great handsome looks and simple naive natures. The silent mountains, wintry winds and those autumns with brown leaves littering Lytton road. That snowfall, the fruit laden summers, the Baluchi, Persian, Pushto songs and music.
A small part of my heart is buried in Quetta. Forever!
